Abstract

Memory and research spaces are fundamental in the construction of identities and in the recognition of territories with polysemic meanings, which are capable of preserving particular ways in which social groups think and act in different temporalities. The Center for Training, Research and Cultural Memory, popularly known as Casa do Carnaval, located in the central area of Recife, has contributed to the safeguarding and dissemination of popular cultures, often neglected by an “Official History”. In this article, based on visits and experiences with its management team, we analyze how this space works in the elaboration of other stories and production of new knowledge, through exhibitions of cultural expressions, idealization of bibliographic materials and preservation of documents of the most different typologies, such as the collection of banners that make up an environment imbued with affection, stories and memories.
