Objective: To understand the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the relationship between elderly people and young people in a University Center. Methodology: Research with a qualitative approach developed in a private University Center in Fortaleza (CE). Eight students regularly enrolled in the undergraduate Nursing course who lived with elderly people in the same household during the period of social isolation, aged 18 or over, participated. Data collection took place in June 2021, using a semi-structured interview script. The data was analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis. Results: Significant changes in habits and coexistence with the elderly were highlighted. The period was marked by fear of contamination, especially in relation to older family members, which required adaptations such as isolation, physical distancing and the creation of new habits to facilitate coexistence. Although it was a challenging time, generating anxiety, stress and loneliness, it also provided opportunities to strengthen family bonds, greater intimacy and value time together. The students adopted strategies such as leisure activities, use of technology and patience to face difficulties, resulting in a coexistence that, despite the challenges, brought positive aspects, such as mutual learning and greater emotional closeness. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the need for adaptation and resilience, especially in intergenerational relationships. Although it represented a period of great emotional and psychological challenges, it also enabled the strengthening of family bonds, providing moments of mutual care and emotional growth between the elderly and young.
