The role of archaeology has been neglected for almost eighty-five years in the study of the First World War of 1914-1918. The beginnings of a modern, scientific archaeology informed by material culture studies began in 2002 with an initial focus by both disciplines on the material culture of war. This new kind of archaeology is multidisciplinary, and investigates landscape, remembrance, cultural heritage, museums, and tourism, as well as military history in the development of a distinctive methodology for investigating the multifaceted nature of the world's first global industrialised conflict and its legacy. This new approach is called Modern Conflict Archaeology, and is empirically and theoretically distinct from the more traditional military history practices of Battlefield Archaeology.Downloads
